Kahvi Bean Cafe: Noel Schoonover, owner, Kahvi Bean Cafe, 270 Main Street, (201) 250-8807
“I’m half Finnish, and the Finns are the biggest coffee drinkers in the world. I’m new to the café business, but I spent decades working in corporate finance and marketing research, focusing on the customer experience. What did that teach me? That you have to be adaptable to the customers’ needs and inventive in meeting them. That’s why I’ve been asking people what kinds of muffins and other baked goods they’d like to have in here. Our piña colada muffins came from a customer suggestion. I came up with the idea of a pumpkin pecan muffin myself, because it was natural, seasonal and healthy. It always sells out. I make all the muffins and cookies myself, starting at 6:30 a.m. every day. And we serve only premium roast Italian coffee with them. A lot of people don’t know we also make fresh squeezed juice and smoothies.
“This is a great location, right next to the library and down the street from a couple of schools. I’m quite optimistic about the plans for Hackensack and Main Street; I wouldn’t have bought this place if I weren’t. It may take a while but I think we’ll see a new and larger crowd moving in here, once the residential development is finished.”
